Risk Through a Seismic Engineering Lens

Jared Keen

Jared Keen is a Technical Director – Structural Engineering at Beca, and is Beca’s Global Seismic Lead. He is the New Zealand Branch Chair of the Institution of Structural Engineers (IStructE) and represents IStructE on the local Structural Engineering Society of New Zealand Management Committee. Jared has a strong track record in seismic and structural engineering in New Zealand, the UK and Europe.

His international project experience includes being lead structural engineer for the new Greek National Opera House in Athens, and the Sporting d’Hiver mixed use development on Casino Square in Monaco. He also led the structural design of the Intesa SanPaolo Tower auditorium in Turin and the seismic design of the National Library of Greece.

Closer to home, he has led numerous Christchurch rebuild projects, including leading Beca’s multidisciplinary teams on the seismically isolated ANZ Centre, the New AgResearch Lincoln Laboratory, and multiple Ministry of Education projects.

He has provided seismic resilience advise to a range of District Health Boards, District Councils and commercial institutions, and is a co-author of the upcoming New Zealand Low Damage Seismic Design Guide.

SCL Doug Jones

'The interplay between International Commercial Courts and International Arbitration in the resolution of Infrastructure Disputes'

Professor Doug Jones AO

Doug Jones AO is a leading independent international commercial and investor-state arbitrator with over 40 years' prior experience as an international transactional and disputes project lawyer. Doug is a door tenant at Atkin Chambers London, and a member of Toronto Arbitration Chambers and Sydney Arbitration Chambers. Doug is also an International Judge of the Singapore International Commercial Court. He has been involved in over 150 arbitrations spanning over 30 jurisdictions in disputes of values exceeding some billions $US. Doug has also published and presently extensively and holds professorial appointments at Queen Mary College, University of London and Melbourne University Law School. In addition, Doug has held appointments at several international professional associations, including as President of the CIArb and ACICA.

SCL Janet Walker

Professor Janet Walker

Janet is an independent arbitrator with chambers in Sydney, London, and Toronto. Over the past 20 years, she has served as sole arbitrator, co-arbitrator and chair in ad hoc arbitrations and arbitrations administered by the ICC, ICDR, DIAC, HKIAC, KCAB, PCA and SIAC in a variety of seats. Her matters range from construction, M&A, shareholder, intellectual property, pharma and environmental. She has a good working knowledge of Spanish and French.

Janet is a member of the boards of the International Construction Law Association and CIArb Canada, and a founding member of SCL North America. She has published and presented on the subject of International Commercial Courts.

Janet is a Distinguished Research Professor (past associate dean) at Osgoode Hall Law School, a member of the Ontario Bar, and a licensed legal consultant of the New York State Bar. She authors Canada’s main text on conflict of laws, cited in more than 400 judgments.
